American flags covered the grounds of Dean L. Shively Middle School this week as residents gathered for the annual Flags of Valor Event honoring veterans, active-duty military personnel, first responders, and fallen service members.
Hosted by the City of South El Monte and its Patriotic Commission, the weeklong display brought together families, students, volunteers, and community organizations in recognition of military service and sacrifice. Residents sponsored many of the flags in honor of relatives and friends who served in the armed forces.
The Flags of Valor Event has become one of South El Monte’s most recognizable Memorial Day traditions. Carefully arranged rows of American flags transformed the school lawn into a public memorial space focused on remembrance and reflection.
Opening and closing ceremonies marked the observance throughout the week. Organizers also held a formal flag retirement ceremony recognizing the respectful handling and retirement of worn American flags.
