American flags covered the grounds of Dean L. Shively Middle School this week as residents gathered for the annual Flags of Valor Event honoring veterans, active-duty military personnel, first responders, and fallen service members.
Hosted by the City of South El Monte and its Patriotic Commission, the weeklong display brought together families, students, volunteers, and community organizations in recognition of military service and sacrifice. Residents sponsored many of the flags in honor of relatives and friends who served in the armed forces.
The Flags of Valor Event has become one of South El Monte’s most recognizable Memorial Day traditions. Carefully arranged rows of American flags transformed the school lawn into a public memorial space focused on remembrance and reflection.
Opening and closing ceremonies marked the observance throughout the week. Organizers also held a formal flag retirement ceremony recognizing the respectful handling and retirement of worn American flags.
Community Volunteers Support Annual Tribute
Volunteers played a major role in preparing the display. Residents assisted with flag placement, event setup, and ceremonial activities during the weeklong observance. Families visited the memorial during evening hours while students toured the site throughout the school day.
City officials said the event was designed to honor veterans, military families, and first responders while creating a gathering space for the community. Information about the city’s patriotic programs is available through the City of South El Monte.
The use of Dean L. Shively Middle School as the host site also gave younger generations direct exposure to local traditions centered on military remembrance and civic service. Students and families moved through the display during the week, many stopping to read sponsored tributes attached to individual flags.
For many attendees, the ceremony carried personal meaning because of family connections to military service. Sponsored flags honored relatives who served during wartime, career military members, and local first responders from communities across the San Gabriel Valley.
Flags of Valor Event Reflects Civic Pride
Patriotic memorial displays similar to the Flags of Valor Event have expanded across Southern California in recent years. Many communities now combine public remembrance ceremonies with volunteer efforts tied to veterans and military families.
South El Monte officials said the annual observance reflects the city’s longstanding commitment to honoring service members and preserving traditions tied to sacrifice and national service. Information about veteran support programs and remembrance efforts is available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
As the week concluded, the rows of American flags remained one of the city’s strongest visual tributes to military service, drawing residents together in shared remembrance ahead of Memorial Day observances.
