Hon. Cindy Wu, a Mountain View School District board member, has been appointed to the California Secretary of State’s Language Accessibility Advisory Committee, a group that helps improve voting access for multilingual communities.

The committee, which operates under the California Secretary of State, advises on improving access to elections for voters with limited English proficiency. Its work includes guidance on translated materials, voter outreach, and education efforts across the state.

Wu said the appointment reflects the importance of removing barriers to civic participation.

“Language should never be a barrier to civic participation,” Wu said. “I look forward to working with state leaders and community partners to ensure all Californians have equal access to voting and civic engagement.”

The Language Accessibility Advisory Committee also provides recommendations tied to major election policies, including the Voter’s Choice Act. Members work with county election officials to expand access and improve participation among diverse communities.

Wu brings a background in education and community leadership to the role. As a board member in the Mountain View School District, she has focused on equity, inclusion, and student success in El Monte.

Community Leadership And Regional Impact

Wu has also worked with nonprofit and civic organizations across the San Gabriel Valley. Her efforts have centered on increasing access and representation for underserved populations, including the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

Her appointment comes as the San Gabriel Valley remains home to one of the largest Asian American populations in the country. Local leaders said that perspective adds value to statewide efforts focused on language access and voter inclusion.

“For many in our communities, language access is directly tied to empowerment,” Wu said. “When we remove language barriers, we open the door to civic engagement, representation, and opportunity.”

State officials said the committee plays a key role in shaping how election systems serve multilingual communities. Its recommendations help guide outreach strategies and implementation of language access laws.

Expanding Access To Civic Participation

Wu’s appointment highlights ongoing efforts to improve voter access across California. The committee’s work supports broader goals to increase participation in elections, particularly among communities that face language challenges.

In her new role, Wu will collaborate with state leaders and local election officials to identify gaps and recommend solutions. Her experience in public education and community engagement is expected to inform that work.

As El Monte continues to grow and diversify, local representation on statewide advisory bodies remains significant. Wu’s appointment connects the San Gabriel Valley to policy discussions that shape access to voting across California.
