The Irwindale Library Mural Project is inviting residents to help preserve local history by sharing photographs, stories, and memories connected to women who shaped the community.
The City of Irwindale and the Irwindale Public Library are developing a “Founding Mothers” mural as part of the city’s Public Library Improvement Project. According to public workshop flyers and community notices, the mural will recognize women whose leadership, work, and family ties helped build and strengthen Irwindale across generations.
Officials said the project combines public art with historical preservation inside the renovated library. Residents are being asked to contribute historical images and personal memories that reflect community life and the role women played in the city’s development.
The city said submissions may include women involved in leadership or public service, family traditions and celebrations, schools, businesses, neighborhoods, and everyday moments that capture strength, care, and connection within the community.
Residents may submit materials through the city’s library improvement project page at Irwindale Library Improvement Project.
Irwindale Library Mural Project Workshops
As part of the Irwindale Library Mural Project, the city also organized public workshops to gather feedback on the mural’s design and themes. Meetings were held at the Irwindale Council Chamber, located at 5050 N. Irwindale Ave.
Workshop notices stated that Workshop No. 2 took place May 19 and focused on a draft mural concept. Workshop No. 3 was scheduled for June 8 and centered on the completed mural design. Officials encouraged residents of all ages to attend and participate in discussions about the artwork and its historical themes.
Residents who could not attend were invited to submit comments by email before posted deadlines. Public notices directed comments to tolivares@irwindaleca.gov.
The city also launched a public call for historical photographs connected to women in Irwindale’s history. Officials asked contributors to include names, approximate dates, locations, and short descriptions when possible.
According to the city’s notices, submitted photographs may help inspire the mural artwork and could later become part of the library’s local history collection, exhibits, publications, or future educational programs.
The mural effort remains tied to broader renovations underway at the public library. Information about the library improvement work and public services is available through Irwindale Public Library Services.
City materials describe the mural as both a visual landmark and a long-term community storytelling project. Officials said the effort aims to preserve local history while recognizing women whose contributions were not always formally documented in earlier civic records or historical projects.
