Rosemead School District Leader retirement marks the end of a nearly four-decade career as Dr. Maria C. Rios prepares to step down from her role as assistant superintendent of administrative services. District officials announced her retirement this week, citing her long record of service to students and school communities.

Dr. Rios began her career in education in 1987 as a bilingual instructional aide. Over the years, she advanced through several roles, including classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and district administrator. Her work has spanned both the Baldwin Park Unified School District and, more recently, the Rosemead School District.

Rosemead School District Leader Retirement Marks Career

Since joining Rosemead School District in 2021, Dr. Rios has overseen key operational areas, including business services, human resources, facilities, and risk management. Her responsibilities have included budgeting, financial reporting, and long-term planning to support district operations.

District officials said her leadership helped maintain safe and efficient learning environments. Her work also supported campus improvements through bond-funded projects and ongoing maintenance programs.

“Throughout her tenure at the Rosemead School District, she has been instrumental in advancing academic excellence, supporting schools, and fostering a collaborative culture among staff and the community,” Board President Nancy Armenta said.

Before joining Rosemead, Dr. Rios served in Baldwin Park Unified, where she held leadership roles focused on student achievement. Her experience in both instructional and administrative positions shaped her approach to district leadership.

Recognition And Leadership Legacy

Dr. Rios has received several professional honors during her career. She was named ACSA District Administrator of the Year in 2018 and Teacher of the Year in 2007. In 2023, she completed the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team Chief Business Official program, strengthening her expertise in school finance.

Superintendent Dr. Philip D’Agostino praised her contributions to the district’s leadership team.

“Dr. Rios has dedicated her career to serving students and supporting school communities with compassion, vision, and excellence,” he said. “I am beyond grateful for the time we spent together leading the Rosemead School District.”

Her tenure in Rosemead also included efforts to align operational systems with educational goals. District leaders said her work supported both staff collaboration and student-focused outcomes.

Transition Plans Underway

The district plans to begin recruiting her replacement, with the goal of filling the position by July 1. Officials said continuity in leadership remains a priority as the district prepares for the transition.

Rosemead School District serves more than 2,400 students across five schools, including four elementary campuses and one middle school. The district covers Rosemead and portions of nearby communities, including El Monte and San Gabriel.

As Dr. Rios enters retirement, district officials said her legacy reflects a sustained commitment to students, families, and public education. Her career leaves a lasting impact on the communities she served across the San Gabriel Valley.
