A weeklong display of American flags will return to South El Monte this spring, inviting residents to honor military service members past and present through the South El Monte Flags Valor program.
The City of South El Monte Community Services Department will host the event May 18 through May 25, 2026, on the front lawn of Dean L. Shively Middle School, 1431 Central Ave. Organizers describe the effort as a community tribute to active-duty personnel, veterans, and those who died in service.
Sponsorships are open to the public at $25 per flag. Proceeds will support local veteran services, including temporary housing assistance, mental health care, and food support programs, according to event materials.
Event Details And Purpose
The South El Monte Flags Valor display will feature rows of American flags installed across the school’s front lawn. Each flag represents a sponsored tribute and contributes to funding local veteran assistance efforts.
City officials state the program aims to connect residents with meaningful ways to recognize military sacrifice while addressing ongoing needs among veterans in the community.

The weeklong observance will begin with an opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on May 18. Attendees can purchase flags onsite, and free hot dogs will be available while supplies last.
A flag retirement ceremony is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on May 20. Community members may bring worn or damaged American flags for proper disposal in accordance with national guidelines.
The event will conclude with a closing ceremony at 11 a.m. on May 25. Organizers will again accept damaged flags for retirement during the final gathering.
Community Impact And Participation
City staff emphasize that the South El Monte Flags Valor initiative serves both as a tribute and a resource generator. Funds raised will remain local and support veterans facing housing instability, mental health challenges, and food insecurity.
Officials note that community participation plays a central role in the event’s success. Each sponsored flag both honors an individual and contributes to services that address real needs among veterans in South El Monte.
